If you get confused by all the different genotypes listed by the sweet corn
varieties, here's a quick explanation of what those mystical letter really
mean.
SU
GENOTYPE SE GENOTYPE
SH2 GENOTYPE
SH2 + SE GENOTYPE
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
SU GENOTYPE (NORMAL)
1. Good seedling vigor
2. Conversion of sugar to starch is rapid
after prime maturity. Therefore window for harvest is narrow, storage time is
limited.
3. Tender kernel
SE GENOTYPE (SUGAR ENHANCER GENOTYPE)
1. Sweetness surpasses the su type
2. Conversion of sugar to starch slower than
su type, longer window for harvest and storage.
3. Tenderness is unsurpassed of any genotype.
4. Isolation from other genotypes not
necessary, but preferred.
5. Germinate better than sh2 types, better
seedling vigor.
SH2 GENOTYPE (SHRUNKEN GENOTYPE)
1. Seed appears shrunken due to less starch
2. Converts sugar to starch very slowly,
maintains quality for a long time after harvest
3. Crisp kernels
4. Cannot stand cold, wet conditions; be
prepared for emergence problems
5. If cross pollinated with other corn, eating
quality is lost
SH2 + SE
GENOTYPE (TRIPLESWEET or XTRA-TENDER)
1. Combines the best of both genotypes, flavor
and sweetness
2. SE kernels mixed with SH2 kernels in every
ear
3. Superior flavor and texture in each kernel
4. Improved plant type, ear package and ear
characteristics
5. Quality maintained over an extended harvest
period
PLANTING
INSTRUCTIONS FOR SH2 HYBRIDS
1. Best emergence when soil maintains 60 to 65
degrees or more
2. Plant no deeper than 1½", uniformity of
planting depth is critical
3. Soil moisture
extremes should be avoided. Seedbeds must be well prepared to maintain
sufficient moisture at shallow planting depths.
4. SH2 and the SH2 + SE varieties should be
isolated by a distance of 250 ft. from any other corn, or planted so that the
pollinating periods do not overlap.
5. Planting speeds of 4 mph or less are
advised. Use the correct planter plates.
