PEA SEED VARIETIES

For those of you who can hardly wait to get out in the garden and plant, peas are the perfect early spring vegetable. Now all you need to do is to decide which type of pea you want to plant. De Bruyn Seed Store carries a wonderful variety of both shell peas and edible pod peas.

Note: Some seed comes treated. Those varieties are denoted with an * by the variety name

SHELL PEAS

Early Alaska 56 24" to 28" Blunt, Light Green 5 to 7 1½" to 2½" Smooth seeded pea. Cold and wet tolerant. Standard early canning pea. 1 to 2 peas per node.
Little Marvel 63 15" to 18" Pointed, Dark Green 6 to 8 3" Plump, straight pods are tightly packed with peas. Sweet, juicy and fine flavored. Good for canning and freezing.
Progress #9 60 14" to 16" Pointed, Apple Green 7 to 9 4½" Good quality and flavor. Used for canning, freezing and market. Best for all around use.
Thomas Laxton 62 28" to 32" Pointed, Bright Green 7 to 8 3½" Hardy plant is wilt tolerant. Excellent table quality since 1898.
Wando 69 28" to 32" Blunt, Dark Green 6 to 8 3½" More heat tolerant than any other pea. Good yields. Adapted for fresh use and quick freezing.
Green Arrow 68 24" to 28" Pointed, Medium Green 9 to 12 4½" Pods are borne in pairs at the top of the plant for easy picking. High yields. Ideal for fresh, freezing or canning.

Dwarf Gray Sugar 65 24" to 30" 3" Light Green, Flat Purple flowers with edible leaves and stems. This is the standard flat podded pea for oriental cooking.
Oregon Sugar Pod II * 68 24" to 30" 3½" Light Green, Flat Pods are broad and very tender when picked before the peas fill in the pod. Excellent quality and flavor. White flowers.
Oregon Giant *

SOLD OUT 2009

69 30" to 36" 5" Medium Green, Flat Large pods that are easy to pick, with excellent flavor and tenderness. Disease resistance. Can be grown without support.

SNAP PEAS

52 24" to 30" 3" Vines need no support. Pods have blunt ends with 7 peas.  Pods are medium green in color and very sweet. Freeze well.
Sugar Daddy * 62 24" to 30" 3"

Short plant doesn’t need staking. 3" pods are dark green and completely stringless! Disease resistance. Good flavor, heavy yields and easy to pick.

Sugar Bon * 60 18" to 24" 3" Medium Green Compact, bushy plants need no support. Disease resistance. Blunt pods contain 7 peas. Can be planted in containers.
Super Sugar Snap 66 55" to 65" 3" Light Green The original, tall snap pea, needs support. Crisp, sweet and succulent pods are best eaten when young (3").
