Garlic

Garlic has been classified as both a vegetable and a herb, and has been used for thousands of years in cooking as well as medicinal purposes. The pungent flavor is due to a chemical reaction that occurs when the garlic cells are broken. Everyone knows that wearing garlic around your neck wards off vampires. 

Garlic is available from md-March through mid-May and from Sept 1 through October 15.
